No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
