The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
